Women competing at a Hyrox fitness race

What Is Hyrox? A Woman's Beginner Guide (and What to Actually Wear)

Women running at a Hyrox event

Your gym added a SkiErg. Your group chat won't shut up about "the sled." Somebody you know just signed up for a race that is eight runs AND eight workouts. Welcome to Hyrox - and if you're asking what is Hyrox and quietly wondering whether you're fit enough to try it, this is for you.

Short version: Hyrox is a fitness race that's blowing up right now, it's absolutely doable for a regular runner who likes a challenge, and - because it mixes running with heavy functional stations - what you wear genuinely matters more than it does for a normal run.

Let's break down the format, the women's numbers, and the gear so you show up knowing exactly what you're walking into.

What is Hyrox, exactly?

Hyrox is a standardized indoor fitness race (sometimes it is outdoors though..) - the same format in every city, so your time in Dallas means something against your time in Berlin. Hyrox is one of the world's fastest-growing fitness racing series, which is why it feels like it appeared in your feed overnight.

Here's the Hyrox structure: 8 rounds, and every round is a 1km run followed by one workout station. That's 8km of running total, broken into eight chunks, with a functional-fitness station between each. You're never just running and never just lifting - you alternate, all the way through. It's the endurance-meets-strength combo that makes Hyrox addictive (and humbling).

The 8 stations, in order

Every Hyrox race runs these same eight stations in the same sequence, each after a 1km run:

  1. SkiErg - 1,000m on the ski machine (arms and core wake up fast).
  2. Sled Push - 50m pushing a weighted sled (this one humbles everybody).
  3. Sled Pull - 50m hauling a sled toward you by rope.
  4. Burpee Broad Jumps - 80m of burpee-into-a-jump. Yes, really.
  5. Rowing - 1,000m on the erg.
  6. Farmers Carry - 200m carrying a kettlebell in each hand.
  7. Sandbag Lunges - 100m of walking lunges with a sandbag on your shoulders.
  8. Wall Balls - throwing a medicine ball to a target: 100 reps.

The women's numbers (so nothing's a surprise)

In the women's open division, the standard loads are: sled push at 102kg (it slides — it's not a deadlift - but FORM MATTERS), sled pull at 78kg, farmers carry with 2×16kg kettlebells, sandbag lunges with a 10kg bag, and wall balls with a 6kg medicine ball for 75 reps. You can also enter as a Hyrox Doubles team and split the station work with a partner, which is the friendliest way to start — highly recommend for your first Hyrox.

None of this requires you to be elite. It requires you to be prepared, and to wear the right thing - which is where most first-timers get it wrong.

What to wear for Hyrox (this is not a normal run)

Here's why Hyrox gear is its own conversation: you're not just running. You're getting down for burpees, hauling sleds, carrying weight, and throwing a ball 100 times - all while sweaty. Your outfit has to survive movement in every direction. The Hyrox rules:

Fitted - everywhere. Baggy shorts ride up during lunges and burpees; loose tanks fall over your head every time you bend. You want a fitted short and a top that stays put when you're upside down. Our Problem Solved Shorts are made for exactly this - a high-rise waistband with silicone grip dots so they DON'T ride up mid-lunge, and a built-in liner so you're covered through every burpee.

Serious support up top. Between the running and the explosive station work, this is a high-impact Hyrox day start to finish. Go for a structured, high-support bra that handles multi-directional movement - our Forget About It Bra is built to lock you in so you're not thinking about it at the sled. Another great option (especially if you're looking to carry fuel during your race) is the Just Run Crop Tank.

Breathable fabric, no cotton. You will sweat more than a normal run - moisture-wicking performance fabric only, so nothing turns heavy and clingy.

Careful with pockets and extras. If you carry anything (which there are STRICT regulations around what you can carry), it needs a secure pocket - or leave it with your bag. (Zip pockets: another reason fitted, well-designed bottoms win here.)

Shoes: a flat, stable trainer beats a soft, high-cushion running shoe for the sled and lunges - you want to feel the floor. Plenty of first-timers use their normal trainers to start; just know the plush max-cushion ones work against you on the strength stations.

Your first-Hyrox checklist (save this)

  1. Know the map: 8 rounds of (1km run + 1 station), 8km running total.
  2. Scale smart: consider Doubles for your first race and split the stations.
  3. Dress fitted, head to toe: shorts that won't ride up, high-support bra, sweat-wicking activewear.
  4. Secure your stuff: secure pockets & zip pockets only, or leave it in your bag.
  5. Flat, stable shoes for the sleds and lunges.
  6. Practice the movements, not just the running - especially wall balls and the sled.

Hyrox is genuinely one of the most welcoming events in fitness right now: everyone's suffering through the same Hyrox stations, cheering each other across the same finish. You do not need to be fast or fit "enough" to belong there - you just need to show up prepared and dressed for the fun! Every pace is welcome here. 💜

A few last things that make your first Hyrox day smoother. Arrive early so you can find your corral, drop your bag, and walk the floor before the wave starts - knowing where each Hyrox station sits removes a lot of nerves. Eat a normal meal about two hours out and sip water rather than chugging it right before you go. Break the run legs into steady, repeatable chunks instead of sprinting the first lap; the people who pace the early rounds almost always finish stronger. Chalk your hands before the sled and wall balls, keep your transitions quick but calm, and remember that everyone around you is racing the same clock. Most of all, treat this first Hyrox as a benchmark, not a verdict - you will want to sign up for the next one before you have even caught your breath.
